Ski Jumping Ramp

This post is for all those who, like me, had no idea that Helsinki has its very own ski jumping slope. There are actually three of them grouped together on a hillside between the apartment buildings of Western Herttoniemi and the protected area south of Viikki. The wooden construction of the big one is rather vintage looking but well-kept and the perfect state of the slopes indicates that the ramps are in use. Despite the many warning signs I decided to climb to the top to get a better view for taking photos.

A bit further south form the jumping slope I found a small slalom hill with a ramp constructed to help skiers accelerate.

Keskuspuisto

Keskuspuisto is a huge park area dividing Helsinki in two. It is stretched between central Töölönlahti in the south and Helsinki’s border along Vantaanjoki in the north where it ends with a semi-forest area. (‘semi’ because of the infrastructure, i.e. lamps, signs, facilities…)
Depending on the latitude Keskuspuisto has great areas for biking, jogging, picnicking, walking and other leisure activities. More info on Wikipedia (FI) and Helsinki web (FI).

Malminkartanonhuippu is Helsinki’s highest hill measuring about 90m above sea level. It’s located near the connecting spot of the three cities – Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo. More info on Wikipedia (FI).

Apart from neat views over the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and quiet forest areas for walks and jogging it features an extensive network of tracks and hops for downhill bikers.

Hernesaari

If you follow the boulevard along the coast direction west from the Kaivopuisto park you will suddenly find yourself in a significantly less pleasant environment – at least according to common standards. The Hernesaari peninsula is entirely covered with huge industrial halls, warehouses, cranes and building sites.
It is here that Kaurismäki has build slums for his movie The Man Without a Past (2002), obviously out of lack of real slums in Helsinki.

Although not very beautiful this area could be of some interest to photographers and for anyone wanting his eyes to rest from the sight of predictable and ordered urban areas.

If you continue walking till the end of the road you will eventually get to a warehouse which houses an ice-hockey school and a cafeteria for those who´d just like to watch.
Coffee is 1€.

Mustikkamaa

To get to the island of Mustikkamaa you have to first cross the Kulosaari island.
In season Mustikkamaa indeed is full of blueberries since it mainly consists of forest. All year round it is the perfect place for sport lovers. There is plenty of paths to walk or jog with wooden structures for exercise. During winter the entire tennis courts, basketball courts and football field are covered with ice and consistently maintained. In the summer I advise to visit the beach along the southern shore of the island!

There´s yet another island to explore after crossing Kulosaari and Mustikkamaa – Korkeasaari. This island is entirely occupied by a zoo and to cross the bridge pictured below you have to buy a ticket first.

Suomenojan Venesatama

Visited this one last Saturday the 3rd Feb.
There are three interesting things I´ve spotted in this Espoo district which I found worthy documenting and that neighbour eachother. A horse stable, an energy plant and a marina.

At this time of the year the marina is closed and all the yachts are stored on the shore creating something like a little, abandoned town.

Despite the cold weather the horse stable is functioning and people come to practice horse riding. With the beautiful energy plant in the background.
