Ski Jumping Ramp

This post is for all those who, like me, had no idea that Helsinki has its very own ski jumping slope. There are actually three of them grouped together on a hillside between the apartment buildings of Western Herttoniemi and the protected area south of Viikki. The wooden construction of the big one is rather vintage looking but well-kept and the perfect state of the slopes indicates that the ramps are in use. Despite the many warning signs I decided to climb to the top to get a better view for taking photos.

A bit further south form the jumping slope I found a small slalom hill with a ramp constructed to help skiers accelerate.

Happihuone

Happihuone

In midst of nature but only minutes from the immediate centre. Happihuone is the place to go when you’re tired of cars, traffic, asphalt, noise, office buildings, glass & steel, shops, products, brands and advertising. It’s a wonderful gallery, art space and whatever one wishes it to be. Located in a beautiful spot between the railways and Töölönlahti.
Unfortunately asphalt is taking over and Happihuone is soon to be torn down, just like Makasiinit, Hanasaari A power plant and so many other beautiful, active places with history. A foreign friend of mine commented once that Helsinki is strange in the way that it seems to have been built only recently. Now we know where that impression comes from.
For more info on Happihuone visit:

or look it up on the map.

Update as of Nov 2007: Finally, after a long struggle, Happihuone has been torn down!

Pihlajasaari

Pihlajasaari are two big and two tiny island to the south off Helsinki’s centre. There are some remains of war architecture, but I guess the main attractions are the beaches and grill places. There is even a nudist beach which I haven’t had the pleasure to visit yet. You get there on a privately-operated, small ferry which will cost you 5€ both ways. It starts from next to Cafe Carusel.

These picturesque rapids are to be found on the southern end of Vantaanjoki. On sunny weekends around these spots many people are fishing, picnicking or just walking through.
There are some old, industrial brick buildings next to the rapids that used to house water turbines. There’s also a museum where you can learn more about the history of this place.

Lauttasaari Fortifications

Hidden by the shore of the northern end of Lauttasaari are several massive constructions that look like bunkers and fortifications. They are leftovers of constructions raised during the Crimean War around the year 1855.

Lauttasaari

Also later on Lauttasaari did have some strategic importance during warfare and there are eroded leftovers of a anti-aircraft cannon to be found elsewhere on the island.

Although Lammassaari is a pleasant and cozy island I was actually mainly impressed by the access. Besides using a boat you can get there by means of a ca 1km long jetty. As you can see from the photo the experience is of very cinematographic nature.

Lammassaari

In case you wonder what to do on the island itself, on the northern shore there is a tree-high wooden look-out with great views – recommended not only for bird lovers.
From there you might see the eastern Finnish cows and Finnish sheep landscaping the shore pastures of Viikki-Vanhakaupunki from May until late autumn.

Lammassaari

Also, if you look well enough, you might find this hidden passage from Lammassaari to Kuusiluoto. Very exciting! ;)

Keskuspuisto

Keskuspuisto is a huge park area dividing Helsinki in two. It is stretched between central Töölönlahti in the south and Helsinki’s border along Vantaanjoki in the north where it ends with a semi-forest area. (‘semi’ because of the infrastructure, i.e. lamps, signs, facilities…)
Depending on the latitude Keskuspuisto has great areas for biking, jogging, picnicking, walking and other leisure activities. More info on Wikipedia (FI) and Helsinki web (FI).

Ruutinkoski are 300m long rapids on the Vantaanjoki river closing keskuspuisto and the western part of Helsinki from the north. There are quite a few lovely spots in the area – very suitable for a sunny Sunday. Read more on Wikipedia (FI).
